Drawing a review of the past achievements and moving forward !

Seminars from the 4th to the 6th of September 2019

The governmental project « Supporting the teaching of French in The Gambia » is going on ! One of the objectives at the beginning of this academic year was to make a synthesis of the first part of the project and think about what will come next.

Around 30 experts were gathered at the Alliance Française for two seminars. Chairing the project, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) was represented, so as the French Embassy based in Dakar, with its partners specialised in the training of teachers and the writing of syllabus. 15 pedagogical advisers and 5 focal points of the region 1 and 2 also brought their contribution.

The first seminar, held on the 4th and the 5th of September, aimed at drawing the synthesis of the monitoring visits in French classes and preparing together a relevant training plan for French teachers (in terms of linguistic and didactic skills).

The second seminar, held on the 6th of September, gathered a new committee in charge of working on curriculums and documents to be combined with.

The committee first studied the current curriculums and French books in order to work on a plan to improve them. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) is a core element, that would then help to possibly implement an equivalence with the Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française (DELF) in the Gambian public system. Eventually, as the French school books (Je Lis, Base, Ados) would still be used, it is necessary to write documents used as explaining guides for teachers.
