Bertrand Westphal is a professor of comparative literature at the University of Limoges, where he heads the reception team 1087 "Human Spaces and Cultural Interactions".

He designed geocritics, which is one of the main approaches to representations of the literary and artistic space.

He is the author of several essays, among which La cage des méridiens. La littérature et l’art contemporain face à la globalisation,winner of the 2017 Paris-Liège Prize, which was published by Minuit in 2016 ; Le monde plausible.
